My Botanical Balcony

Hello everyone! I hope you all are well during this crazy Coronavirus quarantine time. One of the things I have been doing since being at home is growing a small garden on my balcony. I am calling it my "botanical balcony" as it is slowly being taken over by various plants. I have a mixture of herbs, veggies and plants. I've always done some form of gardening since living in apartments, but it was typically just flowers. I find that even with a small space such as a balcony, growing things, whether flowers or food plants, gardening can be a nice way to relax and have a quiet moment with nature.
I have also grown basic herbs such as basil and cilantro inside my apartment.

I grew up in a rural area of NC and my grandfather had two large gardens that I used to spend my spring and summer days playing in and sometimes helping plant, maintain and pick the various items when they were ready. Even though I have a small gardening background, I'd still consider myself a beginner. I'll be posting the progress of my botanical balcony along with some tips along the way so I welcome you to follow me on my gardening journey!

A tour of my "Botanical Balcony"

Since I have been growing various plants over the years, I've collected a nice assortment of planters. Many of them came from Target and a few from Lowe's. I have found that Lowe's can be a bit pricey for basic gardening items, however, you can find some good items on clearance from time to time and at the end of the season. I also purchase my Miracle Gro soil from Target along with accessories such as gardening gloves, watering can, shovels, etc. I've also been able to find seeds and bulbs (both food and flower) at stores such as Dollar Tree and they tend to be 4 packs for $1. They carry some of the same brands as stores like Lowe's, Home Depot and Target but for a much better price.  Below is a video explaining a few more products I use and how I apply them to my plants.

Garden update: 5/30/20

These babies are new to the botanical balcony crew!
It seems like every time I visit my local Lowe's store, they have some new plants that catch my eye! I just added these to my botanical balcony. The citronella plant smells so good! It also serves a dual purpose of keeping mosquitoes away, although they are not horrible in this area.
